Are you planning to build your teaching career in New Zealand? If you are from India, Pakistan, or any international country, this guide will help you understand the two main pathways, requirements, study visa options, and post-study work visa details.

In New Zealand, there are two different education pathways, and choosing the right one is very important:

1. Education Pathway (Not for Teaching Registration)

This pathway includes Bachelor in Education or Master in Education.
➡️ This does not make you eligible for teacher registration with the Teaching Council of New Zealand.
Instead, it prepares you for careers such as:

  • Education consultancy

  • School administration

  • Curriculum design

  • Corporate training

  • Research roles

English Requirement: IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6), writing band must be 7.

2. Teaching Pathway (For Teaching Jobs in NZ)

If your goal is to become a teacher in New Zealand, this is the correct pathway.
Examples of teaching qualifications:

  • Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Level 7)

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Level 8)

  • Bachelor in Teaching

  • Master in Teaching (Level 9)

English Requirement: IELTS 7 in each band.
Many students choose PTE instead of IELTS since it is considered easier.

Study Visa & Post-Study Work Visa

✔ Graduate Diploma & Postgraduate Diploma → 1-year work visa
✔ Master’s Degree (120 or 180 points) → 3-year work visa

Who qualifies for which Master’s?

  • Bachelor with Honours → 120-point Master’s (1 year)

  • Regular Bachelor → 180-point Master’s (1.5 years)

Final Advice for Students

If you want to teach in New Zealand, choose the Teaching pathway, not just Education.
Understand your NZQA assessment, English test options, and visa rules carefully before applying.
